I undertook ethnographic field work among the Chayantaka from
Jan. 1993 to Jan 1994, focusing on several topics including musical
performance, language, identity, place, and ecology.
During the early part of my field work I spent a lot of time recording
musical performances by young people, the most active music-makers
among the Chayantaka. In this photo a group is listening to a
playback of a performance I had just recorded, on Tuesday of Carnival
week.

I also spent a lot of time working with Quechua-Spanish bilingual
field assistants on transcription and translation of song texts.
