US model threatens European traditions
Atle Nyhagen has published a commentary article on University World News discussing a central theme of the book edited with Tor Halvorsen (Halvorsen and Nyhagen 2011)- the role of the US as a model for change in higher education and research in Europe.
In this article Nyhagen argues that while high quality US research universities has been held up as an exemplary model for Europe to learn from or even copy, competition may undermine central values of European nation states and the tradition of 'knowledge distribution'. Competition may also bring new inequality, which may question the status of different disciplines.
