About the Department
The Department of Social Anthropology is located on the 8th floor of Lauritz Melzers Hus (Fosswinckelsgate 6).
At present the department consists of 15 permanent academic staff, approximately 100 MA students, over 20-30 PhD-scholarship holders and 4 administrative staff.
The academic staff have weekly conference hours. During these hours it is possible to consult the staff for general guidance and to take up questions related to the curriculum. Inquiries of a more practical nature can be directed to either the Head of Administration or the Head of the Department.
Study Halls and Computer Rooms
The Social Science Faculty has study halls and computer rooms in four buildings. Master's students have their own desks reserved. There are study halls for students of all levels in Phils Hus and Stein Rokkans Hus. In the Tornøe building (Hermann Foss gate 6) there are study halls and computer rooms for lower-degree students. The department also has access to a limited number of places in the study halls and computer rooms on the 8th floor of Lauritz Meltzers Hus. The study halls are open 08:00-20:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00-14:00 Saturday.
At the start of each semester courses are offered in the use of computers and word processing. Students register for these courses on lists posted on the first floor of Ulrike Phils Hus.
Library Services
The Social Science Faculty Library lies in Hermann Fossgate 6, vis-a-vis Lauritz Maltzers Hus. A course in library use is offered every semester for students on all levels. Information regarding the opening hours is posted at the library.
The Museum
The departments museum branch is located in the cultural-historical section at Bergen Museum. Reception hours are 08:00-15:00 Monday to Friday. Fax: 555 89656
