• Welcome

Dear Colleagues,

The Scandinavian Physiological Society has since 1926 been the driving force for conferences gathering Nordic scientists in physiology and related areas. Objectives are to promote research and development of physiological sciences in member and neighboring countries. The rapid development within all fields of medicine has made collaborations and interactions between scientists/groups of scientists a prerequisite for internationally competitive research. The conferences provide particular opportunities for younger scientists to get insight into other areas as well as possibility to present and discuss their own findings.

Bergen is the second largest city of Norway, dating back to 1070, and the northernmost centre for the Hanseatic League since the High Middle Age.  The first scientific institution, the Bergen Museum was founded in 1826 and from the mid 1800 became an internationally established scientific centre, notably for marine biology and to a large extent built up by the leprosy specialists Dr. Daniel C. Danielssen and Gerharnd Armauer Hansen. In 1946 the University of Bergen was founded and has since developed into a middle sized European institution for 14500 students and 3200 employees within the natural and physical sciences, humanities, medical and social sciences and law.

On behalf of the Scandinavian Physiological Society and the local organization committee it is a great honor and pleasure to invite you to participate in the forthcoming Scandinavian Physiological Society Conference in Bergen, August 12 - 14, 2011.

Welcome to Bergen!

Anne K Jonassen
Head, Organizing Committee

Symposia - Guidelines for submission and evaluation

Proposal guidelines

About 10 symposia will be selected by the Programme Committee. Each symposium will last for 2 hours and must address scientific issues around a coherent theme of interest to a broad audience. There are usually 1-5 plenary speakers. SPS strongly encourages that at least one of the selected lecturers is from one of the Scandinavian countries.

Junior as well as senior scientists are encouraged to participate in the proposals. However, all speakers should be experienced in presenting their research to a multidisciplinary audience. A reasonable gender balance of speakers and chairpersons is strongly encouraged.

Abstracts must be submitted by all speakers at symposia. All symposia participants must register formally to the meeting.

Decisions on proposals

The Programme Committee will examine all proposals that follow the submission guidelines. Selections of the final symposia are made on a competitive basis. Proposals may be accepted as they stand. In some cases, the Programme Committee may accept a proposal provided that the organizers include modifications to improve the proposal and/or to make it coherent with other selected symposia.

Decisions will be sent by E-mail to the symposium organizers shortly after the Programme Committee meeting (see above). The proposals will be definitely accepted once the organizers have replied and confirmed their participation.

Proposal submission

For administrative purposes, the person who submitted the proposal (designated in the submission form as corresponding organizer) will be responsible for all correspondence with the Programme Committee. You will be contacted by the Programme Committee when the final symposia have been selected.

BRYGGEN IN BERGEN
The very first buildings in Bergen were alongside the harbour called Bryggen. Bryggen has been the nerve centre of the city for hundreds of years and the silhouette of its ancient gables is perhaps the most familiar image in all of Norway. In 1360 the Hansas - a German guild of merchants - set up one of their import/export offices on Bryggen and dominated trade for the next 400 years.

Many times Bryggen has been devastated by fire, and the Great Fire of 1702 reduced the whole city to ashes. But Bryggen was quickly re-built on top of foundations that had been here since the 11th century. Bryggen is now on UNESCO's World Heritage List and the city of Bergen is a designated World Heritage City. Read more at http://www.visitbergen.com/en/attractions/All-attractions/?TLp=336474
