Plasminogen activation and invasion of adenocarcinomas in the gastrointestinal tract

For several years I have been studying tissue remodelling and the importance of proteolytic enzymes related to invasion of malignant human epithelial cancers. Together with my research group in Copenhagen we have recently shown that proteolysis exerted by activated macrophages is instrumental for tumour invasion. High local membrane expression of the receptor for plasminogen activator (uPAR) seems to be a major factor that is associated with low survival in adenocarcinomas of both esophagus, the stomach and the colon. In the seminar I will focus on a discussion related to plasminogen activation and invasion of adenocarcinomas in the gastrointestinal tract in humans.
