Publication award to article on breastfeeding
Thorkild Tylleskär and his colleagues received the Faculty’s award for the best publication of the year for their Lancet article on breastfeeding in the south of Africa.
The Faculty’s research awards were presented by the Faculty Board at 13th of June. In addition to recognition, the award winners get some funding for further research.
Thorkild Tylleskär and his collaborators have conducted a large intervention study in which women from the local population get instructions about breastfeeding, and then they convey this advice to mothers in the same community. The study was led by researchers at the Centre for International Health, and was conducted by a research consortium of three European and four African universities.
The results of the study were published in The Lancet, and even if it was not possible to show that the incidence of diarrhea decreased, one could conclude that the intervention increased exclusive breastfeeding.
