Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

  • Have acquired fundamental skills in evaluating methods and theories in a piece of research.
  • outline their research, by preparing questions and design their projects, and to critically clarify how the relationships between data, concepts and theory could be addressed.
  • distinguish clearly between different kinds of explanations and theoretical approaches in social and political science.
  • show familiarity with traditions such as the positivist method, hermeneutics and discourse analysis and their different relevance in the study of organisation, power, social practices and politics in order to substantiate and critically analyse their research options, topics and design.

The course is open for students who have been accepted to the Master´s program at the Department of Administration and Organization Theory

Aim and Content

The purpose of the course is to enhance knowledge of central concepts and methods in the discipline, to provide further insight on the relation between theory and data as well as training in the development of relation between the two.

The course requires prior knowledge on different methods and techniques equivalence to MET102 Social Science Methodology. The course provides an in-depth review of relations between theory and data in selected fields of study. Focus is on the application of central concepts though empirical studies. Working with your exam essay you will have the opportunity to link a research problem to a methodically adequate research design.

Lectures, seminars and individual guidance

Compulsory Requirements

Presentation of a draft of the exam essay. In addition you are required to comment on a presentation from another student.

Assessment methods

20 page essay and 4 hours written exam (2/3 + 1/3)
