Learning Outcomes
Define and explain key concepts and theories in aquatic ecology. Explain key physical and chemical processes that define the ecological frames for organisms and biological processes in the aquatic ecosystem. Explain how organisms adapt to, respond to, and themselves affect the physical, chemical and biological variables and processes in the environment, and how this affects the large-scale patterns of population and community level.

Aim and Content
The course provides a theoretical introduction to aquatic ecology from small-scale chemical and physical conditions to large-scale patterns and processes in fresh- and seawater. Emphasis is placed on understanding how organisms are adapted to the aquatic environment and a quantitative approach to ecology. Classical ecological theories will be discussed and illustrated with aquatic examples. Central elements are vertical profiles, algal blooms, functional response, competition, predation, behavior and life history, succession, variety."
