Aim and Content
The lectures provide an introduction to the requirements for sustainable and environmentally friendly fishing. FAO's classification of fishing gear will be described. In addition, the construction and fishing operations of different fishing gear will be discussed and how biological requirements are needed to insure efficient fishing. There will be special emphasis on showing the importance of fish behaviour and response to stimuli as tools for capture efficiency and selectivity. Selection mechanisms in various fishing gear and methods to estimate selection will be presented. In addition to lectures, there will be a visit to a net factory.
