Learning Outcomes
After completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Explain commonly used methods in neuroscience.
- Understand the theoretical background for different types of electrophysiological recordings.
- Plan and conduct simple experiments using relevant methods in study of the nervous system.
- Interpret and evaluate the results of a simple experiment.

Aim and Content
Aim is to give the students a theoretical and a practical understanding of common methods used in neuroscience research.
Content:
- Hippocampus as a model for studies of synaptic plasticity in the CNS, principles of in vivo recording of the field potentials and induction of LTP. Glutamate synapses in the hippocampus: pre- and postsynaptic structure, dendritic transport and changes due to the induction of LTP.
- Theoretical introduction to the methods, apparatus, data collection and analysis in fMRI studies in humans and animals. Practical demonstration of fMRI recording.
- Principles of the patch-clamp technique and demonstration of in vitro electrophysiological recordings in tissue slices from the CNS. Focus on ligand-gated and voltage-gated ion channels.
- Introduction to stuctural and functional imaging of intact neuronal preparations using multiphoton excitation microscopy. Demonstration of single neuron morphological reconstructions.
- Introduction to the physiology of pain: receptors and circuits for pain, structure of the spinal cord, neurochemistry, plasticity, electrophysiological methods for in vivo recording from spinal cord neurons, experimental setup, recording equipment, data collection. Demonstration of single unit recording in the spinal cord.

Semester assignment in a subject from the course chosen by each student individually. Oral presentation.
