Learning Outcomes

After taking the course the students should be able to:
- write a text analysis of a site and demonstrate knowledge of common website genres
- describe and compare different design, writing and organizational strategies for Web communcation
- write code and publish a simple website with XHTML, CSS and images. This site will have design, writing and organizational strategies that suit the content
- write a report describing the practical work with a collaboratively produced site and explains the choices that are made

Aim and Content

The course provides an introduction to communication on the Web, with an emphasis on using the Web to explain cultural topics. Students will recieve training in interpreting textual and visual communication on the web, and will develop knowledge of Web development and aesthetics. In addition they will get an introduction to information architecture, and become familiar with relevant network technologies and theories of usability. The course also provides an introduction to the technical aspects of Web design. The course covers the basics of Web development necessary to publish a site on the Web using HTML, CSS, images, multimedia. Along with developing technical competencies, students will get a theoretical foundation for making informed choices in presenting and explaining cultural phenomena to broader audiences.

The goal is to enable students to make critical analyses of communication tasks in the humanities in a Web context, and to use modern technology to communicate cultural knowledge on the Web.

Teaching Methods

The instruction will be in the form of lectures, seminars, group supervision, project work and individual exercises, and will take place over thirteen weeks. There are three-hour lectures and one exercise for two hours each week. Students working in groups will develop a website that explains a cultural phenomena. Topics and research question are selected by the students in consultation with the supervisor.

If less than five students are registered to a course, the department might reduce the teaching, please see the department´s guidelines regarding this on "My page". Regarding a course where this is a possibility the students get information about this at the beginning of the semester, and before the deadline regarding semesterregistration 1.February/1.September.

Compulsory Requirements

Students must solve some mandatory assignments throughout the semester. Some of these tasks may go into the portfolio. If students are not able to complete assignments within the deadline due to health or personal welfare reasons, they must send written an application for an extension to the instructor. Some assignments will be done in groups.

In order to take the exam it is required that the student has participated in at least 75 percent of the teaching and classroom activities. Course participation is approved by the course leader.

Assessment methods

Through the semester, students will build up a portfolio with the theoretical and practical work. The folder portfolio will include a site created by a group, an individual report on the work on the site, and a textual analysis of a website. The portfolio forms the basis for the grade.
