Learning Outcomes

After taking the course the students should have knowledge of:
- rhetoric, aesthetics and hermeneutics in the new digital medium
- aesthetic and historical aspects of new digital cultural phenomena
- theoretical and critical perspectives on new media and media development

Students will after the course be able to:
- analyze different aesthetic and cultural aspects of new media
- have an independent scientific basis to perform analyses of digital cultural phenomena

Access to the Course Unit

The course is open to all students with the right to study in the master´s program in Digital Culture at UiB.

Students enrolled in other master´s programs at UiB may apply to LLE for permission to enroll in the course.

Aim and Content

This course focuses on rhetoric, aesthetics and hermeneutics in the new digital medium through cultural artifacts and practices such as hypertext, simulation systems, computer games, multi-user forums, and digital artworks. Through exploration and analysis of new media and digital works, the students should develop theoretical and critical perspective on media development, the idea of a digital media evolution, and on the roles that technology plays in the media's cultural development. Topics such as network art, digital literature, virtual reality and computer games are considered from a theoretical and practical perspective. Technological visions and practices will be investigated and evaluated.

Recommended previous knowledge

Students should have completed DIKULT301 and DIKULT302, and have experience in academic writing.

Teaching Methods

The instruction is given in the form of lectures and seminars totalling 30 hours.

If less than five students are registered to a course, the department might reduce the teaching, please see the department´s guidelines regarding this on "My page". Regarding a course where this is a possibility the students get information about this at the beginning of the semester, and before the deadline regarding semesterregistration 1.February/1.September.

Compulsory Requirements

The student will deliver two short written assignments and a draft of term paper. The theme and research question for the term paper must be approved by the course leader.

In order to take the exam it is required that the student has participated in at least 75 percent of the teaching and in the activities of the teaching covers. Course participation is approved by the course leader.

Assessment methods

Term paper of 4000-5000 words.

Grading Scale

Grade scale A-F.

PhD students grade scale Pass/Fail.

Reading List

About 1000 pages of assigned reading.
