Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will have acquired basic knowledge of the sound system of English and of key concepts in phonetics and phonology.
Students will also have acquired basic knowledge of the grammatical structure of the English language and of key concepts in syntax and morphology.
Students will further have developed the skills necessary to analyse linguistic material.
Students will also have a certain understanding and ability to use linguistics terms in an accurate way.
Students will have acquired the skills necessary to expand their knowledge through further studies of linguistics at 200-level.

The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen. Others can apply to the Division of Student Affairs to take specific exams.
Aim and Content
ENG101 consists of two parts; phonetics and grammar. The study of phonetics aims at giving students knowledge of English pronunciation and key concepts in phonetics and phonology. The study of grammar will provide an introduction to grammatical theory, with a focus on syntax and morphology. Both parts will provide students with a vocabulary for linguistic description and analysis.

Recommended previous knowledge
It is strongly advised that students, in addition to fulfilling the general admission requirements, also have good grades in specialized English courses from Upper Secondary School.
For students with a background other than the Norwegian school system, a level of competence in English corresponding to B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.
For this course, it is assumed that students have taken EXFAC00SK Language and Communication. It is highly recommended that students have completed this exam before they start their English studies.

Compulsory Requirements
There are no compulsory assignments, but students can hand in written assignments in phonetics and grammar.
Assessment methods
Exams are offered each semester: one towards the end of the spring semester and one in the middle of the fall semester.
The exam is a six-hour school exam. No aids are permitted during the exam. The exam consists of two parts and each part counts 50% of the final grade. The students must pass both parts in order to receive a passing grade for the course.
Grading Scale
The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.
Reading List
The curriculum includes a presentation of English phonology and basic topics in English grammar.
