Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have acquired advanced knowledge of the grammatical structure of the English language and of key concepts in syntax and morphology.
Students will also be able to use the knowledge to analyse linguistic material.
Students will further have knowledge about various political and social aspects of English as a global language, as well as an overview of the linguistic characteristics of a number of varieties of English.
Students will also have a good understanding and ability to use linguistics terms in an accurate way.
Students will have acquired the skills necessary to expand their knowledge through further studies of linguistics at 200-level.

The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen. Others can apply to the Division of Student Affairs to take specific exams.
Aim and Content
ENG106 consists of two parts, one which deals with grammar and one which deals with English as a global language. ENG106 builds on ENG101.
The study of grammar will provide students with advanced knowledge and understanding of the structure of the English language. The lectures in global English offer insight into various social and political aspects of the English language, as well as linguistic descriptions of global varieties of English. Both parts will provide students with a vocabulary for linguistic description and analysis.

Recommended previous knowledge
It is strongly advised that students, in addition to fulfilling the general admission requirements, also have good grades in specialized English courses from Upper Secondary School.
For students with a background other than the Norwegian school system, a level of competence in English corresponding to B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.
It is also recommended that students have completed EXFAC00SK Language and Communication and ENG101 English Linguistics I or corresponding courses.
Subject Overlap
Credits cannot be awarded for both ENG101 and ENG104 (5 credits), ENG105 (10 credits), ENG106L, ENG111 (5 credits) or ENG112 (5 credits).
Teaching Methods
Lecture: 5 hours per week (12 weeks)
Grammar seminar: 1 hour per week (12 weeks)
Compulsory Requirements
There are no compulsory assignments, but each student may hand in written assignments in grammar and global English.
Assessment methods
Exams are offered in ENG106 each semester: at the end of the fall semester and in the middle of the spring semester.
The exam is a six hour school exam. No aids are allowed during the exam. The exam consists of two parts (grammar and global English) and each part counts 50% of the final grade. Global English consists of two parts as well (Global English I and II). The students must pass all parts in order to receive a passing grade for the course.
Grading Scale
The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.
Reading List
The curriculum includes the main parts of English grammar as mentioned in ¿Learning outcomes¿ and an introduction to English as a global language.
