Pre-requirements
This course is theorectically demanding, and presupposes a strong command of English. We recommend a competence level in English of B2 or higher according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Learning Outcomes
The course aims to increase students' understanding of English grammar, and to improve their ability to express themselves correctly in English. A futher objective of the course is also to familiarise students with the central aspects of variation in English.
ENG106 comprises grammar and an introduction to the sociolinguistics of English.
The course in grammar is a continuation of the practical and theoretical introduction to English grammar provided in ENG101. The course covers topics such as verbs, adjectives and adverbs, word order and classification of clauses.
The course in sociolinguistics focuses on variation in English. Variation is considered in the context of English as a global language. Aspects of national, social, regional and contextual variation are discussed.
