The course is open to all students with admission to the University of Bergen. Others can apply to the Division of Student Affairs to take specific exams.

Aim and Content

ENG212 gives a critical and theoretical introduction to English language literature or themes related to culture. The course focuses on a period or genre in English language literature, or on a literary, cultural or inter-disciplinary subject.

 

The course will give the student expanded knowledge about the literature and/or culture in the English speaking world and train the critical and independent understanding of issues related to the study of literature and/or culture. The course will also improve the students ability in written and oral English.

 

ENG212 or a corresponding course is an elective part of the specialization in English. Students taking two courses in English at the 200 level can choose between either taking ENG211 and ENG252 or ENG212 and ENG251.

Recommended previous knowledge

It is advised that the students have completed their first semester studies. Additionally they should have completed ENG101, ENG106, ENG122, and ENG125 or corresponding courses.

 

For students with a background other than the Norwegian school system, a level of competence in English corresponding to B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.

Assessment methods

There is an exam in ENG212 each semester.

The exam is a written six hour school exam.

Grading Scale

The grading scale is A-F, where F is a fail.

Reading List

The curriculum (consisting of 7-10 works) may include fictional, non-fictional and theoretical texts.
