A condition for entry into this course is having been accepted for the Masters programme in philosophy.

Aim and Content

FIL303 draws its subject-matter from one of the research seminars being held at The Department of Philosophy during the current semester. These seminars relate to ongoing research activity at the department.

The course is meant to offer students a basis for adopting a critical approach towards core philosophical problems, which in turn should put them in as better position to work on their master theses/thesis? in an independent manner.

During the seminar both oral discussion and written work will be emphasized.

Specialized subjects taught in English autumn 2011:

"Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy"

"Mortal Questions" (Articles from Thomas Nagel´s book Mortal Questions. The articles include metaphysics/philosophy of mind and ethics.

Specialized subjects taught in English spring 2012:

"Plato´s Sophist and Heidegger´s reading of the dialogue"

Recommended previous knowledge

A good proficiency in English is necessary since it ought to be assumed that much of the prescribed reading will be in English.

Teaching Methods

Lectures: 2 hours per week for 13 weeks, a total of 26 hours.

Compulsory Requirements

The following compulsory study activity are included in FIL303

-The handing in of reading list no later than the 15th. of October in the autumn semester, and the 15th. of April in the spring semester.

Regarding postponements of the compulsory activities and for how long they may be valid, we refer to the supplementary regulations for the Degree course, the Faculty of Humanities, University of Bergen.

Assessment methods

Candidates will have a one-week home examination. The examination answer paper is to be 4000-6000 words.

The written paper is to be defended orally in an examination conducted by the teacher of the main course and another examiner. On the basis of the oral examination the grade given to the written work may be adjusted by one grade up or down. During assessment special weight will be placed on having a broad overview of central issues within the entire main field of the course.

The examination will be arranged each semester.

Examination grades will be given on the scale from A to F.

It is not allowed to use the same research seminar to take the examination as in either FIL301 or FIL302.

The prescribed reading for a seminar in a research subject serves as required reading for the course.
