Recommended Qualifications
The prerequisite is knowledge of French similar to the courses at the 100-level. The course builds on FRAN102.

The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen.

Pre-requirements
Students must have oral and written proficiency in French at an intermediate level.
Teaching Methods
Lectures, seminars and supervision.
3 hours per week.
About 12 weeks.
Compulsory Requirements
At least four weeks before the exame date, the students must receive approval for an oral presentation (about 15 minutes) related to the reading list. The students develop the presentation in cooperation with the teacher. The manuscript for the presentation must be turned in at the same time as the presentation is given.
In connection with the semester paper, there must be at least one meeting between the student and the teacher.
The compulsory requirements are valid for one semester following the semester the course was offered.
Assessment methods
The exam is a semester paper of about 4000 word and written during the last three weeks of the semester. The paper is written in French.
At the end of the semester there is an oral exam related to the literary works on the reading list. The oral exam will also test the proficiency in French of the candidate.
The oral exam and the semester paper each count 50 percent of the total grade. Both parts must be passed in the same semester.
Grading Scale
The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.
Reading List
The reading list consists of five novels in addition to an introduction to literary theory. You have to read one or two representative novels from each of the last four centuries. As background material, you also have to read history of literature relevant for the novels. You also have to read an introduction to literary theory related to the aim of the course.
In cooeration with the teacher you may switch one of the novels with another from the same century and of the same scope and degree of difficulty.
Any changes to the reading list will be announced at the beginning og the semester.
