After completing the course focusing on a linguistic issue, the candidates will have a good insight into the theoretical foundation and methodological perspectives for the issue which has been covered, as well as knowledge of current research within this field.

Access to the Course Unit
The course is open to all with admission to the Master programme at the University of Bergen.
Aim and Content
The aim of the course is to give a specialisation in a linguistic or literary topic. The linguistic topic can be selected from f.ex. French phonology, syntax, semantics, lexicology, textual linguistics or socio-linguistics. The literary topic can be related to a genre, a period, an author, an issue related to literary theory, or similar.

Pre-requirements
Bachelor degree with a specialisation in French.
Recommended previous knowledge
French 100- and 200-level or similar.
Teaching Methods
The teaching is given as seminars, 12 double sessions per semester.
Compulsory Requirements
At least four weeks before the exam date, the students must receive approval for an oral presentation (about 15 minutes) related to the reading list.
The students develop the presentation in cooperation with the teacher. The manuscript for the presentation must be turned in at the same time as the presentation is given.
In connection with the semester paper, there must be at least one meeting between the student and the teacher.
The compulsory requirements are valid for one semester following the semester the course was offered.
Assessment methods
The exam is given at the end of the semester. The exam consists of a written semester paper of about 4000 words to be turned in three week after it is given, mandatory supervision is included.
Grading Scale
The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.
Reading List
The reading list for a linguistic topic is about 200 pages.
The reading list for a literary topic consists of a literary part (3-5 fictional works) and a theoretical part (about 100 pages).
Any changes to the reading list will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
