Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, the candidates will:
¿ have knowledge about central theories of modern linguistic and literary science
¿ have insight into central linguistic terms and be able to use them in linguistic analysis

¿ be able to relate theory to French language data

Access to the Course Unit
The course is open to all with admission to the Master programme at the University of Bergen.
Aim and Content
The course is a mandatory part of the Master programme in French. The course is offered in cooperation with NTNU and is also part of the Master programme in French at NTNU.
The course gives an introduction to
a. Linguistic theories from structuralism to the present time
b. Literary theories after 1900
Furthermore, the course also gives insight into how these theories are used to study French texts and corpus.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, the candidates will:

Pre-requirements
Bachelor degree with a specialisation in French.
Recommended previous knowledge
French 100- and 200-level or similar.
Teaching Methods
Web-based teaching in cooperation with NTNU. There will be one seminar in Bergen or Trondheim at the beginning of the semester.
Compulsory Requirements
The student must turn in a draft of each of the papers.
Assessment methods
Portfolio assessment:
- Two written papers, one in linguistics and one in literature. Each paper shall consist of about 2500 words.
- One oral exam (20 min) including questions related to one of the papers.
The student receives one final grade. The two written papers count 2/3 and the oral exam 1/3 of the final grade. All parts must be passed in order to pass the course.
Grading Scale
The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.
Reading List
The reading list will be composed by the teachers teaching the course, and will vary some from one semester to another. A complete overview will be given at the start of the semester.
