Learning Outcomes
On completing this course the students should be able to:
Knowledge:
- Account for recent perspectives on masculinity.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the intersections between gender and other key dimensions of social organisation, such as class and ethnicity.
- Demonstrate an understanding of gendered economics, welfare arrangements, and household organisations.
Skills:
- Discuss post-colonial and critical non-Western perspectives on gender.
- Identify different approaches to the body and health in relation to important themes such reproductive health and sexuality.
General competence:
- Outline historical trends in gender/feminist studies including various approaches to the relationship between the biological ("sex") and the social ("gender").
- Outline trends in Gender and Development as an academic and political field and discuss gender in the context of political mobilisation.

Aim and Content
The main aim of this course is to provide theoretical insight into key concepts of gender/feminist analysis, both in general and in relation to development issues. Emphasis will be placed on developing the students' ability to reflect critically on gender issues in their own research and to approach gender from a cross-cultural and comparative perspective. The course aims to provide understanding of gendered power relations in a global and local perspective, gendered aspects of poverty and vulnerability, and gender as a tool for political mobilisation. It also offers knowledge about important substantial domains in gender analysis.

Teaching Methods
Different forms of teaching will be employed, including 12 two-hour lectures, seminars and workshops.

Assessment methods
Students' work in this course will be evaluated through portfolio assessment and oral examination.
The portfolio assessment will be given one grade and will consist of:
- Task 1: max 1000 words, constituting 1/3 of the grade
- Task 2: 2500-3000 words, constituting 2/3 of the grade. Feedback from teacher(s) will be given during the writing process
- Oral examination (grade adjusting)
Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
