After having completed the course student should be able to

  • perform classical role analysis
  • conduct participant observation in familiar and unknown cultural contexts
  • conduct fieldwork with special emphasis on the long interview, observation, and photo elicitation
  • carry out semiotic analyses of written and oral data
  • carry out discourse analysis

Access to the Course Unit

Open for students at Master´s level who meet the prerequisites. GEO306 is obligatory for Master's program in Development Geography. For Master in geography the course is optional.

Aim and Content

Students are trained in undertaking fieldwork in connection to their master thesis. The course focuses on the interpretation of qualitative field techniques, with emphasis on participatory observation.

The course focuses on a) the interpretation of texts (interviews, public documents, newspaper articles, school essays etc.) with the help of semiotics, the analysis of categories, and the analysis of the use of metaphors; b) visual techniques in the field and the analysis of visual data (pictures) and c) discourse analysis.

The course is intensive and students should read parts of the curriculum in advance
