Learning Outcomes

After completing the course GEOV260 the student should be able to:

- explain the difference between source rocks, reservoir rocks and cap rocks

- explain how hydrocarbons are generated and expelled from source rocks, how they get trapped in reservoir rocks, and how their composition may be changed within the reservoir.

- discuss the most important methods utilized in exploration for hydrocarbons, reservoir characterization, reserves estimation, and production

- discuss the main types of petroleum basins

- define the main types of hydrocarbon traps

- define ´hydrocarbon play,´ with examples from the North Sea.

Aim and Content

The course gives an introduction to geological processes that are important for the generation and accumulation of petroleum. The lectures will focus on topics such as (a) composition and origin of various petroleum types, (b) origin, composition and maturation of source rocks, (c) reservoir rocks and their petrophysical properties, (c) various trap types, (d) sedimentary basins and their petroleum potential. Examples of oil provinces will be given, with particular emphasis on mature oil provinces, such as the North Sea. An introduction to geological and geophysical surveying methods of importance to hydrocarbon exploration will be given, as well as an introduction to geological interpretation of wireline logs.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course GEOV260 the student should be able to:

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
