Learning Outcomes

After having completed UiB course INF252 on Visualization (with average success), a student will have gained the following learning outcomes:

  • recall the principal basics of data visualization
  • give examples for aspects of human perception
  • name a selection of Gestalt laws
  • discuss different types of data representations
  • explain volume rendering and the use of a transfer function
  • describe the use of iso-surfaces for volume visualization
  • give examples for different kinds of flow visualization
  • illustrate the use of linear filtering in visualization
  • list a number of examples for information visualization
  • implement selected visualization algorithms

Aim and Content

The course contains central aspects of scientific and data visualisation. These include visualisation of: volume (medical), vector and tensor data (flow), abstract data (databases) and illustrative visualisation.

Recommended previous knowledge

A solid background in (object-oriented) programming, comprised of both knowledge and practical experience, is required. In particular, we recommend having experiences with C/C++ before subscribing to this course.

Compulsory Requirements

Exercises.

Compulsory assignments are valid two semesters, the semester of the approval and the following semester.

Assessment methods

Passed compulsory exercises. 3 hours' written examination. (Compulsory exercises can be graded contributing to the final grade. In case there are very few students, an oral examination can be organized instead of the written one.)

Aids allowed vill be announced on My Space in the beginning og each semster.

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
