Learning Outcomes

This part of the training is based on traditional research animals, i.e. mammals.

Laboratory Animal Science (LAS) covers knowledge on how different factors influence animal experiments. There are many such factors that contributes to background noise and bias research results, such as the environment and factor by the animals themselves. It is important to identify and control such factors.

In LAS 202 the student will achieve knowledge on the biology of the most commonly used (mammal) research animals and how environmental factors influence these.


LAS 202 also focus on anesthesia and the use of pain killers and planning and design of animal experiments.

Finally ethics and use of alternatives (3R) is an important topic.

Aim and Content

LAS 202 will together with LAS 201 cover the authorities' formal demands to mandatory training for persons that are involved in, plan to or reports on animal experiments.

Recommended previous knowledge

Student should have some knowledge of anatomy and physiology. LAS 201 is an advantage but not a formal demand
