English if English-speaking students attend the seminars, otherwise Norwegian.

Pre-requirements

Bachelor´s degree in languages or linguistics.

Learning Outcomes

Students will read an introductory book on the main topic and a selection of articles representing different approaches to language typology. Students may also submit a special language (normally a non-Indo-European language) including a grammar and five pages of texts to be translated into Norwegian or English, including comments in a typological context.

The aim of the course is to give an introduction to basic theories and methods in language typology. This will give the student an understanding of both the variation range of the world´s languages and an understanding of what makes up a potential human language.
