Learning Outcomes
Students will learn to read, speak and write about topics that are covered in the course. They will learn to understand and converse about subjects from daily life with a sufficient level of pronunciation such that communication is not hindered. Students will learn to use the grammatical sentences covered in the course. Students will acquire an active vocabulary of ca. 1000 words and an even greater passive vocabulary. They will learn to produce simple texts and express personal opinions using a simple language.They will be able to recognize words and phrases that they have seen or heard before, and partly understand the meaning of a word from their knowledge of Norwegian morphology.

Aim and Content
The Norwegian courses do not give credit for applicants with Norwegian as their primary Language.
The target audience for NOR-U1 is beginners or those with limited proficiency in English. The course is more extensive than NOR-U01 and suitable for those who wish to take further Norwegian courses. Students will attain good comprehension of spoken Norwegian regarding topics from daily life and will themselves be able to converse in Norwegian about the same topics
Particular emphasis is placed on students, learning to read simple authentic Norwegian texts and express themselves in writing on topics related to daily life, and student life.
The courses can be combined as follows:

Subject Overlap
There is overlap between Nor-U1 and Nor-U01. The two courses combined are worth 15 credits
Teaching Methods
The course totals 78 hours of instruction with lectures 2-3 times a week in two hour periods.It is expected that students are prepared and participate actively in lessons.
Students will submit at least five written assignments during the course.
Compulsory Requirements
Attendance is mandatory. Participants who are absent more than 25% of the time will not be permitted to take the exam.
Assessment methods
The course concludes with an examination that includes an oral and a written part in Norwegian bokmål. The oral exam lasts about 10-15 minutes and consists of a conversation between examiner and one or two students. The written part of the exam lasts 3.5 hours and covers listening tests, reading and writing skills. It is given an overall grade.The written part of the exam counts for approximately 2/3 of the final grade, the oral part for approximately 1/3. One must pass both the written and oral part of the examination in order to pass the course.
It is not possible to register for the exam or lectures on the same subject more than three (3) times.

A scale from A - F, with E being the lowest passing grade.
Reading List
The reading list is announced at the start of the semester. A primer in Norwegian or a compendium of texts at the beginners level will be used. Students will also need a dictionary

The course will be evaluated in line with the Department's policies and UiB's quality assurance system.
The evaluation may be conducted in writing or as discussion with the responsible instructor.
