Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of normal Norwegian speech and conversations about general topics and topics related to studies and student life. They will also be able to discuss and converse in Norwegian about the same topics, using vocabulary learned during the course and with good pronunciation. They will be able to read authentic Norwegian texts at a normal level of difficulty and express themselves in writing about topics covered by the course. Students will learn the key parts of Norwegian morphology and syntax. They should have acquired an active vocabulary of ca.2000 words and an even greater passive vocabulary. They should be able to recognize words and phrases that they have seen or heard before, and partly understand the meaning of a word from their knowledge of Norwegian morphology.

Aim and Content

The Norwegian courses do not give credit for applicants with Norwegian as their primary Language.

NOR-U2 is an intermediate level course , and is based on NOR-U1. The course focuses on topics and vocabulary dealing with studies and student life as well as texts relating to Norwegian culture and current events in Norwegian society.Key parts of Norwegian morphology, syntax, and pronunciation will be covered. Discussion and written assignments about course topics are important aspects of the program. Students may also make a short presentation of a topic of their own choosing.

Teaching Methods

The course totals with 78 hours of instruction with lectures 2 or 3 times per week. It is expected that students are prepared and participate actively in lessons. Students will submit at least five written assignments during the course.

 

 

Compulsory Requirements

Attendance is mandatory. Participants who are absent more than 25% of the time, will not be permitted to take the exam.

Assessment methods

The course concludes with an examination that includes an oral and a written part in Norwegian bokmål.
The oral part of the exam lasts 15 minutes and consists of a conversation between examiner and one or two students.

The written part of exam lasts 4 hours and covers listening tests,
reading and writing skills.
It is used a graded scale from A-F with
E as the lowest passing grade.

The written part of the exam counts for approximately 2 / 3 of the final grade, the oral part for approximately 1 / 3.
One must pass both the written and oral part of the examination in order to pass the course.

Students who have been registered in NOR-U2 three times, cannot register for courses and examinations in NOR-U1/2 or NOR-U2/3

Reading List

The reading list is announced at the start of the semester.
A primer in Norwegian or a compendium of texts at the beginners and intermediate level will be used. Students will also need a dictionary.

Course Unit Evaluation

The course will be evaluated in line with the Department's policies and UiB's quality assurance system.

The evaluation may be conducted in writing or as discussion with the responsible instructor.
