Learning Outcomes
After completed course PHYS115 the student shall be able to:
- apply special relativity to selected problems,
- solve the Schrödinger equation in 1, 2 and 3 dimensions, and interpret the solution,
- explain atomic binding and the periodic system,
- explain electron structure in metals and semiconductors
- apply statistical physics methods to simple problems, and explain basic principles in nuclear and particle physics

Aim and Content
The topic gives a broad introduction to modern physics: special relativity, quantization, the Schrödinger equation, atomic physics, classical and quantum mechanical statistics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics and particle physics. The topic prepares students for further studies in atomic and sub-atomic physics.
