Aim and Content
This course gives a formal introduction to electro- and magnetostatics, electromagnetic energy and potentials, calculation techniques, Maxwell´s equations, gauge invariance and conservation laws. Furthermore an introduction is given to relativistic electrodynamics, electromagnetic waves and different sources of electromagnetic radiation.
Learning Outcomes
At completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
- Explain the content of Maxwell´s equations, in physical and mathematical terms.
- Explain gauge invariance, how the equations are consistent with relativity, and how they predict electromagnetic waves and radiation.
- Use the physical laws, equations and solution techniques to carry out calculations of relevant quantities.
Pre-requirements
Basic knowledge of minimum 60 ECTS in physics.
Recommended previous knowledge
PHYS 112, PHYS 115
Assessment methods
Oral exam. Half term exam and/or paper can count up to 25% of final grade.
Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
