Aim and Content
More than a century has elapsed since Freud first developed psychoanalysis as a method. During the course of this period the discipline has played an integral part in how modern human beings perceive themselves and their place in society. This course aims to introduce students to central themes and ideas in psychoanalysis, with the emphasis on the concept of the unconscious. Furthermore, Freud will be placed scientifically and culturally, in the context of his own time (early 20th century) and our time (early 21st century). Discussions of concepts such as the unconscious, repression and transference will provide a psychoanalytic perspective on two subjects of particular relevance: sexuality and culture. Certain features of clinical psychoanalysis will also be introduced.

Compulsory Requirements
The group instruction seminars are mandatory for the students, and they have to be present at not less than seven out of ten meetings. Supervision of the term paper is also mandatory. Prior to submitting their term paper for evaluation, the students are required to have passed the general knowledge test of this course.
Assessment methods
The basis for evaluation consists of a term paper (of 3000 - 4000 words) that the students write during the semester, and a general knowledge test that is to be held by the end of the semester. Papers and tests can be written in Norwegian or in English. Students are required to have passed the general knowledge test prior to submitting their term paper for evaluation.
