Learning Outcomes

The cognitive psychology course is designed to give the students an understanding of the main concepts and problems in the field of modern cognitive psychology. Cognitive psychology seeks to understand and predict human behaviour by studying the way we receive, interpret, retain, process and use information. The course presents the various methods of investigation in these areas and the main features of research results to date. The students will be able to describe different empirical approaches to the main themes and assess the strengths and weaknesses of different research design methods in the field of cognitive psychology.

Aim and Content

The students will be able to present and engage in critical discussions of central themes on the basis of the cognitive approach to the following fundamental areas:

  • Perception
  • Awareness
  • Consciousness
  • Memory
  • Representation of knowledge (including neural networks)
  • Language
  • Affect cognition
  • Problem-solving (including expertise)
  • Thinking and reasoning
  • Evaluation processes
  • Decision-making

The students will also receive knowledge of the practical applications and implications of research in this area for normal human functioning, also for selected clinical areas. In addition, they will become familiar with the historical development of modern cognitive psychology.

Compulsory Requirements

A four hours ethics lecture is mandatory (100%), as is oral presentation of group assignment.

Assessment methods

The course will be evaluated by means of a six-hour formal written exam.

Grades are given according to the alphabetical grading scale from A to F.
