Learning Outcomes

The scope of health psychology includes the role played by psychological factors in the cause, development and consequences of health and illnesses. The objectives of health psychology are to understand and explain, to develop and test theories and to give practical demonstrations of these theories. The course is based on a national health perspective, with the main emphasis on behavioural risk factors, such as smoking, the use of alcohol, diet and physical inactivity, and initiatives to prevent the main health problems in Norway (cardiovascular disease, cancer and physical stress complaints).

Due to the limited number of spaces available and special entry requirements, admission to the course is limited.

Aim and Content

The students will be given an understanding of:

  • the quality of life and the incidence of illness and mortality within the population
  • major behavioural and environmental factors affecting national health
  • theories on the effect of behaviour and the environment on health
  • principles and models of illness prevention and health-promoting initiatives
  • ethical problems related to preventive health psychology

The course is based on a national health perspective, with the main emphasis on behavioural risk factors, such as smoking, the use of alcohol, diet and physical inactivity, and initiatives to prevent the main health problems in Norway (cardiovascular disease, cancer and physical stress complaints).

Teaching Methods

The course requires two weeks of full-time work. Lectures and group work form the basis of the course. Students work in groups of 3 with project papers covering the course objectives. The project papers of 5-10 pages are submitted for assessment. The course arranger is available to provide individual guidance at predetermined times. The course ends with a presentation day, where the assignment is presented orally; a full day presence is required.

Assessment methods

Course approval requires the award of a "pass" on submission of an approved paper and attendance at the presentation day.

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
