English, Norwegian if only norwegianspeaking students participate.
Learning Outcomes
The objective of the course is to provide a basic introduction to the physical and thermodynamic principles of mass transfer and phase equilibrium, with an emphasis on how these principles affect the design of equipment and result in specific requirements for quality and capacity. The course is part of the specialisation for the Bachelor´s degree in process technology.

Aim and Content
The course will cover the fundamental principles of mass transfer processes and phase equilibrium. These principles are applied to the design of equipment for distillation (binary systems as well as multi-component mixtures), extraction, absorption, desorption, drying, crystallisation and membrane technology. Approaches range from simple graphical solutions to the use of process simulation software.

Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge of chemical thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
Compulsory Requirements
As part of the course there are 7 tutorials. 3 of these are related to the use of commercial software for process simulations. These three tutorials, as well as two of the other 4 tutorials, have to be approved in order to get exam from the course. The tutorials is valid for 7 semester.
Assessment methods
4 hours written exam. The exam can be oral, depending on the number of students. Approved calculator is allowed.
Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
