Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course the students should be able to understand and explain how main issues of Norwegian nation building processes and the modern breakthrough, as well as contemporary tendencies, are expressed through artistic and cultural practices in the 19th, 20th and 21st century.

Objectives

The aim of the course is to introduce students to Norwegian culture, art and theatre. The course is primarily intended for students who have been admitted under the bilateral exchange agreements and also other non-Norwegian speaking students. The course cannot be included as a specialization course within a bachelor's degree at University of Bergen; it can only be taken as an independent course.

Contents

The course provides an introduction to central areas of study from the disciplines of Culture Studies, Art History and Theatre Studies. The historical development of national traditions within Norwegian culture, art and theatre is a perspective which will be focused on.

Description of Learning Materials and Media

There is a reading list of approximately 1000 pages.

Teaching Methods

In addition to lectures, visits to the theatre and museums will be included as part of the tuition.

Evaluation

There will be continual evaluation of the course.

Assessment / Examination Format

The course will conclude with a 6 hour school examination. Grades will be set on an alphabetical scale from A-F. The standard examination can be taken every semester.
