Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course the students should be able to explain and understand the mecanisms and driving forces behind the concept of "the Modern Breakthrough", and address the major debates and controversies connected with this literary period. They will also be able to understand how the various writers met and reshaped the challenge that the ideologies of the Modern Breakthrough provided. The course will give the students with an overview of Scandinavian literary history and major canonical works.

The course is open to all students with admission to the University of Bergen.
Aim and Content
The course provides an introduction to 19th century Scandinavian literature (drama, prose, poetry), comprising the period 1850-1900. Emphasis will be placed on the dramas of Ibsen and Strindberg, as well as on the development of the Scandinavian psychological realist novel (J.P. Jacobsen, J. Lie, A. Garborg, H. Bang, A. Skram). Knut Hamsun's subsequent «attack» on the realist/naturalist aesthetics of the Modern Breakthrough Period will be given special attention.
