Pre-requirements

No formal requirements, but all teaching is in Spanish and is based on a knowledge of Spanish corresponding to the courses at the 100-level in Spanish language and Latin American studies.

Learning Outcomes

The course will facilitate specialization in a subject from Latin American literature, for example a period, a genre, a subject, a national literature or similar. The subject can be chosen from a selection of texts from 1492 to present time.

 

The students will have broad general knowledge of the field and more specialized knowledge of a limited area. They will be able to work independently on problems based on academic knowledge. The students will be able to continue developing their own competence and specialization independently.

The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen. Persons without admission can apply to the Division of Student Affairs to take a specific exam.

Aim and Content

SPLA202 is an advanced course in Latin American literature of 15 credits. The topic of the course will change from semester to semester.

Recommended previous knowledge

SPLA202 requires a knowledge of Spanish corresponding to the courses at the 100-level in Spanish language and Latin American studies. The teaching builds on SPLA102.

Teaching Methods

Instruction is organized as seminars, and stretches over 12 weeks, with 4 hours of teaching per week. The schedule is the same as SPLA252.

None

Assessment methods

The assessment method is a six hour written school exam. The exam must be written in Spanish. When grading both the linguistic competence and the academic content will be assessed.

 

The students can make use of monolingual and bi-lingual (for example Norwegian-Spanish/Spanish-Norwegian) dictionaries approved by the Department during all of the exam days. The students themselves must bring the dictionaries to the exams and be aware of and follow the rules regarding controls of the dictionaries.

Grading Scale

The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.

Reading List

The curriculum (about 800 pages) will contain selected literary works, and also linguistic and historical texts related to these.

As a main rule the students should follow the curriculum of the current semester. In special cases permission can be given to use curriculum from previous semesters. The student must apply at the beginning of the semester and explain the reasons for the application. Contact the Department of Foreign Languages.

The selected curriculum will contain a close to equal distribution of female and male authors.
