Learning Outcomes
The student will gain basic knowledge about selected topics within German culture in the period from the Enlightenment up to today, develop a more reflected understanding of the material through analyses of different cultural expressions in historical and social context and be able to give written and oral presentations of the material in German.

The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen.
Aim and Content
The course will schematize different aspects of German culture from the time of the Enlightenment up to today using different texts and cultural forms of expression such as fiction and non-fiction literature, films, music and visual arts as a basis.
It also deals with important elements in the development of standard German.
TYS112 is a compulsory part of the specialization in German.

Recommended previous knowledge
It is advised that the students have a knowledge and competence in German equal to level II from Upper Secondary School or corresponding.
Teaching Methods
- The teaching offered includes lectures/seminars and group teaching that requires active participation from the students. Important: Part of the teaching in TYS112 is at the University of Kiel.
- 3 double sessions in Bergen + teaching in Kiel
- 10 weeks in Bergen + 6 weeks in Kiel
Compulsory Requirements
Supervision of assignment.
Assessment methods
Assessment is based on a supervised written assignment and an oral exam (about 30 minutes).
The supervised written assignment will be of approximately 1500 words, not including table of contents, problem statement and bibliography.
The oral exam consists of a presentation (15 minutes) and a conversation on a topic related to the curriculum (15 minutes).
Both parts of the exam must be passed in the same semester.
One joint grade will be given. When determining the grade the supervised assignment counts for 60%, the oral exam 40%.
There is an exam every semester.
Grading Scale
The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.

The curriculum includes different texts and cultural forms of expression, such as fiction and non-fiction literature, films, music and visual arts.
Place of Teaching
Bergen and Kiel.
Course Unit Evaluation
The teaching is evaluated according to the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen.
