English Language Requirements
Non-native English speakers must document their English language proficiency in order to be considered for admission to Master's degree programmes at the University of Bergen.
Valid tests and examinations
- TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language:
- minimum score 550 for paper-based test
- minimum score 213 for computer-based test
- minimum score 80 for Internet-based test
- IELTS - British Council's International English Language Testing Service:
- minimum score 6.0 (Academic test)
- APIEL - Advanced Placement International English Language examination:
- minimum score 3
- MELAB - Michigan English Language Assessment Battery:
- minimum score 85
- University of Cambridge examinations:
- First Certificate in English
- Certificate in Advanced English
- Certificate of Proficiency in English
The test results should not be more than 2 years old and should be sent to us directly by the test centres.
Please note that applicants from Asian countries (for example Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam) with a BA/ BSc/ BEng degree where the language of instruction has been English are not exempted from the English language requirements.
Exemptions
Applicants who can provide proof/documentation of one of the following are exempted from submitting an English language test or examination certificate:
- Applicants from countries which are members of the EU/EEA and/or the Council of Europe/UNESCO-Cepes, and who studied English as their first foreign language over a period of minimum 7 years at compulsory/upper secondary school.
- Applicants from Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK, the USA and New Zealand do not have to submit TOEFL/IELTS test results. This is also the case for applicants who have completed at least one year of their university education in either of these countries.
- Applicants satisfy the requirements regarding proficiency in English if they have completed and passed one of the secondary school examinations listed below with English in the curriculum:

In exceptional cases, applicants may provide proof of English proficiency in other ways.
