UiBs involvement in joint degrees and programmes

Joint degrees and joint study programmes have become important tools in the process of internationalising education and improving its quality. UiB participates in four Erasmus Mundus joint degrees and several other joint degrees and programmes.

Academic staff, departments and faculties at the University of Bergen (UiB) are very engaged in this process and are continuously developing their relations with national and international colleagues. Through joint degrees and programmes, our objective is to offer excellent international programmes in selected fields and to give students unique opportunities to live and learn in different campuses and in different cultures.

To encourage the development of joint degrees and joint study programmes, the European Union established the Erasmus Mundus (EM) programme in 2004, a prestigious programme for cross-border cooperation and mobility with the overriding goal of enhancing the quality of European education and promoting dialogue between people and cultures worldwide. Erasmus Mundus joint degrees and programmes aim to promote European education and are expected to attract the very best students in their field. UiB is a partner institution in four EM programmes. This puts UiB at the very top of the rankings when it comes to Norwegian involvement in the Erasmus Mundus programme.

Similarly, in 2007, the Nordic Council announced funding for the development of joint Nordic degrees and programmes to enable Nordic higher education institutions to provide study programmes of top international quality and to benefit from Nordic synergies. UiB is coordinating one such programme and participating in another.

UiB is also a partner institution in several other international joint degrees and programmes in such fields as humanities and natural sciences. Moreover, planning and development activity at UiB is high. This may lead to several fruitful collaborations in the near and more distant future.
