You will also receive useful and essential information during the Introductory Programme and in the Semester Startup brochure.

Semester Registration

Semester registration deadlines:

Autumn semester 1 September
Spring semester 1 February

Register at StudentWeb

All students must complete their semester registration by registering for the semester at StudentWeb, which includes signing up for classes and exams.

Pay the Semester Fee

All students must be members of the Student Welfare Organisation (SiB). To become a member you must pay the semester fee through the University of Bergen, currently NOK 480. NOK 30 of this amount is a contribution to the student organization SAIH’s work for education in the southern Africa and Latin America.  If you for any reason do not wish to support SAIH, you may subtract NOK 30 from the amount and pay NOK 450. Click for more information on SAIH. If you wish to support SAIH further, you can make a contribution directly to their bank account. You will find bank account details at SAIHs website.

You will find an invoice in your personal Welcome information envelope. Exchange students will become a member of SiB on the basis of their exchange agreement and do not have to pay the semester fee.

Semester Card

When you have completed your semester registration (registered at StudentWeb and paid the semester fee if applicable), you will receive your personal semester receipt by post. The perforated part in the left-hand corner is your semester card.

The semester card, together with your student ID card, serves as proof of being a registered student.

Correct Address

The postal service in Norway will not deliver letters or parcels if they cannot find your name on the postbox, so make sure that you write your full name on your postbox as soon as possible. In addition, the postal service will not deliver letters or parcels with an incomplete/incorrect address and it is therefore very important that you register the correct address when registering at StudentWeb.

If you for example live at Fantoft Student Hostel, your correct address will be:
[Your name]
Fantoft student hostel
P.O. Box [no.]
5075 Bergen

User Account

All students must have a user account

Your user account will provide you with access to:

  • My Space
  • your personal e-mail account
  • copy and printing services
  • computers on campus
  • wireless internet (including at the student hostels)

How to open a user account

Once you have completed the semester registration, you can open a user account at sebra.uib.no. You will need your UiB registration number, student number and PIN, all of which you will find in your Welcome letter.

In the process of opening your user account, you will receive your username (remember to write it down!) and create a personal password, both of which you will need to access all the services listed above.

Your user account will be activated by the following day. This account is personal and must not be shared with others.

My Space

You log in to My Space with your username and personal password. Here you will find relevant academic information about your courses, a calendar with your timetable, relevant general messages from academic and administrative staff, discussion groups, etc.

Personal E-mail Address

You will also be assigned your own personal e-mail address: name.familyname@student.uib.no

You log in to your e-mail account online at webmail.uib.no using your username and personal password. Personal and general messages from academic and administrative staff will be sent to this address.

We expect you to check My space and read your UiB e-mail several times per week!

Norwegian ID number

Notification of Move to Norway from Abroad

Students staying in Norway for more than 6 months have to notify the National Registry of their move to Norway, and apply for a Norwegian ID-number (‘personnummer’). In your information envelope you will find the form ‘Notification to the National Registry (NR) of move to Norway from abroad’, and by submitting this form you notify the National Registry and apply for a Norwegian ID-number. The form must be handed in to the local National Registry Office in Bergen called ‘Folkeregisteret/Skattetaten’. When you have a valid residence permit, the form should be handed in personally to the National Registry (Folkeregisteret/Skatteetaten’).

When you hand in the form, the required documentation is:

  • valid passport
  • current residence permit

The Norwegian ID number - when issued - must be communicated to the Centre for Information and Student Services, to be entered into the Student Register.

Health Check

The Norwegian health authorities request that the following information is presented to all new international students intending to stay more than 3 months in Norway:

On arrival in Bergen, the Norwegian health authorities require that all new students who need a residence permit, have to be tested for tuberculosis by getting a chest X-ray.The health check is part of the obligatory registration procedure for international students, and you should make an appointment for testing during the Introductory Programme, or if you arrive later, at the Centre for Information and Student Services.

Students from the following countries are exempted from the tests:

Austria Australia Belgium Canada
Czech Republic Cyprus France Germany
Greece Hungary Ireland Italy
Japan Luxembourg Malta The Netherlands
New Zealand Nordic countries Poland Portugal
Slovenia Slovakia Spain Switzerland
United Kingdom USA

The purpose of the visit is:

  • to check documentation of earlier tests and vaccinations for tuberculosis.
  • to take a chest X-ray.

Persons exempted from tuberculosis testing in accordance with the above list must nonetheless attend a health check if they have resided in countries other than those listed above. This also applies to students who reside in TB risk countries for more than three months, for example during fieldwork.

Note that the residence permit will not be valid without final clearance from the Norwegian health authorities. It is therefore important that you remember to bring your vaccination records. It is also possible to be tested for hepatitis and HIV at the Office for Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Travel Medicine, if desired.
