Læringsutbyte
Students should be able to:
- Outline basic historical trends in gender/feminist studies including various approaches to the relationship between the biological ("sex") and the social ("gender").
- Discuss post-colonial and critical non-Western perspectives on gender.
- Account for recent perspectives on masculinity.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the intersections between gender and other key dimensions of social organisation, such as class and ethnicity (the female face of poverty, gendered vs. ethnic patterns of marginalisation etc.).
- Outline trends in Gender and Development as an academic and political field.
- Identify different approaches to the body and health in relation to important themes such as HIV-AIDS and reproductive health.
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts of family and household analysis and of changing patterns of kinship and family in a global perspective.
- Discuss gender in the context of political mobilisation.

Mål og innhald
The main aim of this course is to provide theoretical insight into key concepts of
gender/feminist analysis, both in general and in relation to development issues. Emphasis
will be placed on developing the students´ ability to reflect critically on gender issues
in their own research and to approach gender from a cross-cultural and comparative perspective. The course aims to provide understanding of gendered power relations in a global and local perspective, gendered aspects of poverty and vulnerability, and gender as a tool for political mobilisation. It also offers basic knowledge about important substantial domains in gender analysis.

Different forms of teaching will be employed, including lectures, seminars and workshops.

Students' work in this course will be evaluated through portfolio assessment, including an end of semester oral examination.
