Mål og innhald

Students are expected to acquire a fundamental theoretical understanding of the preconditions for and the variations in the development and configuration of the political systems of Latin America.

The course provides a theoretical introduction to the historical and structural frame conditions for the development of political regimes in Latin America compared to Europe, as well as an empirical overview of the variations in the development of Latin American political systems and structures. The course deals with the patterns and waves of the processes of political mobilization and change. A central element in the course is to describe and explain how different structures and conflicts influence political regime developments with an emphasis on the struggle for democracy. The course seeks to provide an overview of the phases in state-and nation-building and democratization with a particular emphasis on critical junctures that constitute the basis for the configuration of the most important elements of the political systems as they have developed over time. The course emphasizes variations between countries and how similarities and differences can be explained.
