Biörn Tjällén is a medieval historian and a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Centre for Medieval Studies. His main fields of interest are the political thought and historiography of the Middle Ages, particularly in its later centuries. Biörn is interested in state formation, an area of study that bridges the disciplinary divisions of the humanities and social sciences, and the traditional boundaries of historical periodization. His current project – Political thought and political action in the European periphery – explores the transmission of European academic political thought to the Nordic countries and examines the relevance of its traditions for the conceptualization of the Scandinavian polities of the later Middle Ages.
Growing up in northern Sweden, Biörn received his doctorate from Stockholm University in 2007. From 2007 to 2009 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Danish Research Foundation’s Centre for the Study of the Cultural Heritage of the Middle Ages. He is also a Research Associate of the Stockholm Centre for Medieval Studies and of Trinity College, Dublin.
