Semester of Instruction

Objectives and Content

The course includes: Behaviour of biomolecules in solution and the solid state and nomenclature, conformation, dynamics and the effects of hydration of biopolymers (proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates). Issues of central importance will be intermolecular forces (hydrophobic and hydrophilic), folding forces, aggregate formation, complex equilibrium, reaction kinetics and structure-function relations.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course KJEM217 the student will be able to:

  • explain biomolecular structure and how physical chemistry principles are employed on such biomolecular systems.

Required Previous Knowledge

KJEM 210Chemical Themodynamics and KJEM251 NMR-Spectroscopy 1, or equivalent

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Written exercise with oral presentation. Approved exercises (compulsory work) are valid for six following semesters.

Forms of Assessment

Oral examination. In case more than 4 candidates are registered, the examination may be written (4h).

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
