Natural Product Chemistry

Postgraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

The course provides a brief introduction to plant systematics. Significant poisonous and medicinal plants, together with natural medicines, will be discussed. Important classes of compounds (secondary metabolites) in and from nature will be emphasised, and stress will be put on classification, nomenclature, structure, biosynthesis, occurrence, analysis and pharmaceutical perspectives. Practical exercises demonstrate different techniques within natural product chemistry.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course KJEM238 the student will be able to:

  • provide an overview of the field of natural product chemistry.
  • identify different types of natural products, their occurrence, structure, biosynthesis and properties.
  • discuss the use of natural products as starting materials for medicines.
  • carry out independent investigations of plant materials and natural products.
