Analytical Chemistry

Postgraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

The course give an introduction to quantitative chemical analysis of organic and inorganic compounds in common sample matrices like air, water, solid materials and biological tissues. Different steps in the analytical process will be treated, such as sampling, sample preparation, chemical and instrumental analysis, quality assurance, and evaluation and reporting of analytical results. The students will work with both natural and prepared samples in the laboratory course.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:

The student

  • can explain the principles of the most common methodologies in quantitative chemical analysis
  • can give examples of applications of the most methodologies in quantitative chemical analysis
  • can explain the most common sources of analytical error and propose measures to avoid them
  • can apply written procedures to perform accurate quantitative measurements at the laboratory

Skills:

The student

  • can calculate analytical results based on common principles of quantification
  • can assess the quality of the result of an analysis

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
  • Compulsory attendance at the first lecture
  • Laboratory course. The grade in approving analysis results in the lab and keeping lab journals is valid for 5 subsequent semesters.
  • In order to obtain approval of the mandatory activities, and therefore gain access to the final exam, one must submit mandatory assignments of a satisfactory standard within the set deadlines. mandatory assignments should be your own work.
  • Serious violations of the HSE rules will lead to a loss of the right to compete the laboratory course.
  • It is not possible to use more than 3 attempts (semesters) to complete the laboratory course.
  • Forms of Assessment

    Digital Written examination (4 hours).
