Access to the Course

The course is open to students enrolled in the Master¿s programme in Spanish language and Latin-American studies at the University of Bergen.

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

The topics dealt with in the course may vary from semester to semester. Teaching consists of lectures and/or seminars twice a week for 12 weeks, as well as individual supervision of a term paper.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Students are required to submit a draft of their term paper and to attend supervision. Supervision via e-mail will be given only in extraordinary circumstances and only following application to the department. Deadlines for submission of term paper drafts will be announced in the lectures/seminars. Approved coursework is valid for one semester following the semester of instruction.

Forms of Assessment

Students are to write a supervised term paper of ca. 4,000 words in Spanish plus bibliography. The topic for the term paper must be approved by the course instructor. The term paper will be assessed by a committee at the end of the semester.

Students are required to write at least one of the supervised term papers in SPLA321 and SPLA322 individually. However, two students can agree to co-write one of the term papers, in which case the term paper must be ca. 6,000 words in Spanish plus bibliography. Co-written papers will be graded jointly.

Grading Scale

The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a failing grade.

Reading List

The reading list (ca. 500-600 pages) contains both literary works and theoretical texts.

As a rule, students are to adhere to the course reading list given the semester the course is taken. However, alternative reading lists may be approved following an application to the course instructor(s) which argues for the alternative reading list. In semesters where no teaching is given, the reading list from the previous semester is to be used.

Texts on the reading list are more or less equally divided between male and female authors.

Course Evaluation

The course will be evaluated in accordance with the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen.
