Master's degree application procedures for citizens from outside the European Union

  • The application portal "Søknadsweb" opens 1 October
  • The application deadline is 1 December
  • Studies start in August

Applicants who are not citizens of a country within the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland must follow these guidelines on how to apply for admission.

Step 1. Check admission requirements

Before you start your application for admission, please check that you have the required academic background. Only applicants who meet the admission requirements are qualified. If you are not qualified your application will be rejected. 

Admission to UiB is highly competitive. Approximately 8 % of international applicants are granted admission. 

CHECKLIST - ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

  1. You must have obtained a bachelor's degree, normally of minimum 4 years' duration. Find specific requirements for your home country in our country list.
  2. You must have obtained a minimum grade of 2nd Class Upper Division, grade B or the equivalent.
  3. Your degree must include courses equalling at least 1.5 years of full-time studies in a subject relevant to the programme you apply for.
  4. You must check if the programme you wish to apply for has additional admission requirements. See our list of Master's programmes in English.
  5. You must document your English language proficiency, see Step 2 for details.

Step 2. Do you meet the English language requirements? 

Applicants who are not native English speakers must document their proficiency in English by taking an internationally recognised English test.

Schedule your test early enough for the results to reach us within the application deadline 1 December.

Applicants from some English-speaking African countries, and applicants with a degree taught in English from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Middle East are not exempt from submitting an English language test.

Step 3. Open application account

Online Application Form - Søknadsweb

  1. Choose English language in the upper right corner.
  2. Choose International Applicant.
  3. Click "Register new international applicant" and follow the instructions given.
    • Make sure your personal information is correct: contact address, e-mail, mobile phone number, preferred language, etc.
    • Use your private address, not your university address. It is important that you enter the city code/post code and city.
  4. Click on "Save" to finish the registration. You will be redirected to the login page.
    • An email confirming your registration has been sent to your registered e-mail address
    • This email also contains your password for logging in.
  5. Log on to Søknadsweb and start the application process.

Step 4. Register your application

Register a new application

  1. Complete "My Profile" - click "Next".
  2. Choose New application: "Master's Programmes in English for Non-European Union applicants".
  3. Select the programme(s) you wish to apply for. You may choose to apply for two programmes in a prioritized order.
  4. Click "Save".

Step 5. Upload documents and submit application

Document requirements

You must upload the documents as PDF-files of good quality and:

  • We require all documents to be scanned from original documentation.
  • If the original language of your documents is not English or a Scandinavian language, officially certified copies of a translation to one of these languages must accompany certified copies of your documents in the original language.

You must upload: 

  1. CV including your educational background.
  2. Secondary School certificate.
  3. University degree certificate(s)/diploma(s) with a grading scale.
  4. Transcript of records (an official statement listing courses/subjects you have completed at your university).
  5. Documentation of English language proficiency.
  6. Copy of your passport or picture ID including full name, date of birth and gender.
  7. Motivation letter, maximum 450 words.
  8. Check if the master's programme you wish to apply for has any additional requirements.
  9. You must document sufficient funding to obtain a residence permit for studies. Valid forms of documentation of funds:
    • Financing provided by applicant: Recent bank statement/transcript in your name showing possession of the required amount (NOK 111 657).
    • Financing provided by sponsor: Guarantee letter and recent official bank statement/transcript showing possession of the required amount (NOK 111 657).
    • A letter confirming that you are eligible for a scholarship/student loan from your home country.

Click "Next".

Application receipt

Check the receipt and click "Done". We will also send the receipt to your e-mail.

Application status

You have finished your application, what's next?

You can change your application until the deadline 1 December. The status of your application will be Under consideration on Søknadsweb until we have finished the processing.

Admission Process

1 Oct - 1 DecApplication period: You can change your application and upload new documents until the deadline 1 December.
1 Dec - 1 FebRegistration period: We check that the applications meet the formal requirements.
1 Feb - 1 AprilProcessing period: Complete applications will be processed in cooperation with the faculties and departments.
Mid-AprilOffer of admission: Applicants who are offered admission to UiB will have the result and their Letter of Acceptance published on Søkandsweb. You will also be notified by e-mail.
End of AprilRejections: Applicants who are not offered admission will be informed by e-mail at the end of April.
By 1 MayOffer of admission: Applicants with an offer of admission must accept or decline the offer of admission.
By 15 MayStudent housing: Apply for student housing as soon as possible and before you apply for a residence permit.
By 1 JuneDeposit money: In order to obtain a residence permit for studies, you have to deposit money to SiB’s Deposit Account for International Students.
By 1 JuneResidence permit: Apply for a residence permit for studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the question "Do you have higher education from another university or college" mean?

Please select Yes. It is simply a control-question and will not have any implications for your application.

How do I upload documents?

When you create your application, you follow the steps (1-5) on Søknadsweb and upload accordingly.

If you log in later, choose My documents from the top menu and from there upload your documents. You can upload documents to Søknadsweb at any time until the deadline 1 December.

At Søknadsweb there is no button to officially send my application, so do I just leave it and it will be dealt with?

Søknadweb does not have a button to officially submit your application. Your application is officially complete when:

  • You have filled in your complete home address.
  • You have selected the study programmes you wish to apply for.
  • You have uploaded all the required documentation.

You can change your application until the deadline 1 December.

Should I send any documents by post?

No, you do not need to send any documents by post. We will check the original documents of admitted students after arrival at UiB.

I cannot find 'My documents' in the top menu - what do I do?

This is mainly an issue for applicants using a smart phone or tablet to apply: If you can't find 'My documents' in the top menu, click on the three white stripes in the top left corner and you will find 'My documents' in the drop down menu.

The list of documents to upload contains titles like 'Learning agreement', 'Diploma' and 'Repertoire for audition' - does this apply to me?

The document titles listed are the same for all admissions to UiB, some of them will therefore not apply to you. You should only choose the titles that corresponds to the documents you wish to upload. If you cannot find a relevant title, choose 'Other'.

Do I have to upload all the documents by 1 December?

Yes, 1 December is the final deadline for submitting the application AND uploading all relevant documents.

Do I have to send copies of my documents by mail?

No, we do not accept documents sent by post - you have to upload all the documents to Søknadsweb. There are however special arrangements for applicants from China.

Note that if you are granted admission, you have to bring your originals to Bergen for verification.

What should the letter from my parents documenting funds contain?

The letter from your parents as documentation of funds must contain the following:

  • Confirm the relationship with the student (mother, father or legal guardian).
  • Confirm that the person will support the student's stay in Norway financially during the whole study period.
  • Confirm the amount and study period.
  • Signature.

Remember to upload the documents as pdf files.

How long should the Motivation letter be?

This is up to you to decide, but approximately 1 page (450 words) is a good standard.

I have applied for two study programmes, do I have to write two Motivation letters?

You can upload two different letters or write them as one, both will be ok.

Do I have to upload Recommendations letters?

No, we do not require you to upload Recommendation letters as part of the application process. Please check the list of required documents in Step 5.

At Søknadsweb there is no button to officially send my application, so do I just leave it and it will be dealt with?

Søknadweb does not have a button to officially submit your application. Your application is officially complete when:

  • You have filled in your complete home address.
  • You have selected the study programmes you wish to apply for.
  • You have uploaded all the required documentation.

You can change your application until the deadline 1 December. The status of your application will be Under consideration on Søknadsweb until we have finished the processing and published the result.

    My application status says Under consideration. What does it mean?

    How do I get the housing guarantee? Do I have to apply for student housing now?

    You should not apply for housing now. Applicants that are granted admission to UiB, will have information on how to apply with a housing guarantee. The application deadline for student housing is 15 May.
