How to apply to UNIS

You can apply to study at UNIS Svalbard if you are nominated for an exchange period at UiB.

Main content

UNIS - The University Centre in Svalbard

If you want to apply for courses at UNIS, you must apply for admission to both UNIS and UiB. You must follow both application procedures in detail and both UiB and UNIS require that you upload copies of official transcripts to document your grades and student status.

How to apply

The login procedure to UiB and UNIS are different. Read the following information carefully!

1. Apply to UiB

Your home coordinator must nominate you in UiBs online nomination portal before you can apply to UiB. You will receive a password from UiB to access UiB's Søknadsweb as soon as you have been nominated.

Choose International Applicant and log in with your email address and password. Apply for the course option called UNIS.

The application deadline is 25 April.

How to apply to UIB

2. Apply to UNIS

Choose Register new international applicant. Write in your application that you are applying through an agreement with the University of Bergen.

The application deadline is 15 April.

How to apply to UNIS

UNIS and UiB use the same application system. Make sure you have chosen the correct institution at the top of the login page of Søknadsweb.

UiB as a second choice

UNIS has limited enrollment capacity. We therefore recommend that you consider applying for courses at UiB as well as UNIS, that way you will have the option to come to UiB as a second choice.

If you want UiB as your second choice, remember to choose both courses at UiB and the option UNIS in UiB's application form.

Student housing

Once admitted to courses at UNIS you can apply for student housing in Longyearbyen through Samskipnaden.

If UiB is also an option for you, you may also apply for student housing in Bergen.

The application period for housing in Bergen is:

Autumn semester (start August)1 April - 10 May
Spring semester (start January)1 October - 1 November

You are safe to accept the contract for housing in Bergen, even if you have not received an offer of admission from us or UNIS yet. You can cancel your housing with Sammen if needed without any extra costs if you follow the instructions and deadlines for cancellation (see bottom of page under Cancellation of the housing offer).

It is very important that you remember to cancel your student housing in Bergen if you get admitted to UNIS. The cancellation deadline is 24 June.

Admission

UNIS will inform you directly whether you are admitted to the courses you have applied for. They will also notify UiB.

If you get admitted to UNIS, UiB will issue your letter of acceptance. The letter of acceptance will be issued by 10 June.

You must accept the offer both at UNIS and at UiB. We will give you the details during the applicaiton process.

Semester registration for admitted students

Follow UNIS' instructions on how to register for the semester.

On 20 June you will get access to UiBs online services. You should follow the instructions on how to claim your user account at UiB as you will need to log into Studentweb at the end of your stay at UNIS in order to get access to your transcript of records.

You do not need to register for the semester at UiB.

Certificate of Arrival and Learning Agreement

Certificates of Arrival are signed in Longyearbyen for students who are admitted at UNIS.

Learning Agreements are signed at the University of Bergen. You will find the details for your LA and your contact person at UiB here
