Rolf E.S. Halse

The objective of Rolf Halse’s PhD project is to examine the representation of Muslim characters in the US television serial 24, and to investigate how different interpretative communities read and perceive Muslim characters. Hereunder, Halse studies how the portrayal of Muslims changes from the early to the latter seasons of 24.

In addition, Halse looks at this in relation to multiculturalism and a shifting political climate in the USA. Theoretically, his dissertation aims to bring together academic work in cultural studies on representation, stereotyping, and TV audiences. Empirically, textual analysis of the TV serial, focus group interviews and analysis of online fans’ texts, is carried out.
